Finally a first round pick that plays like one

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Saturday 30 September 2006 at 11:45 pm

Linebacker Ernie Sims is playing like a man possessed!  Sims has 27 tackles in the Lions first three games and is living up to his reputation as a hard hitter.  Sims has brought some nastiness and athletic ability to the Lions defense.  Finally a first round pick of Matt Millen’s that plays like one.  I would say I hope Millen keeps it up, but I don’t want him here to make the next pick for the Lions.

Lions vs. Rams

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Friday 29 September 2006 at 10:18 am

This is the Mike Martz Bowl.  The Lions will come out with all guns blazing as they try to win a big one for their offensive co-ordinator that thought the Rams gave him a raw deal.

The Lions would be smart to run the football a little bit more this week, because the Rams allow 129.7 yards rushing per game and 4.5 yards per carry.  You just know that Coach Martz won’t have the patience to stick with it.  Jon Kitna has played relatively well passing for 801 yards and an 89.3 QB rating.  Look for the Rams to double cover Roy Williams (16 rec, 245 yards) and make someone else beat them.

The Rams will probably try to run the ball half the time with Steven Jackson (286 yards rushing).  After watching film of the Lions defense, Marc Bulger has to be excited about the game.  Lions opponents have completed 75.5% of their passes, with 7 TDs and 0 INT!  Bulger has thrown for 711 yards this season.  Look for Torry Holt (20 rec, 230 yards) and Isaac Bruce (13 rec, 220 yards) to run wild in the Lions secondary.

The Lions just don’t look like they matchup well with the Rams.

Lions show some life, but lose 31-24

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Monday 25 September 2006 at 10:37 pm

Finally the offense showed some life against the Packers defense. Jon Kitna had a pretty good game except for one pass……an interception that was a pick-six.  Kitna completed 25 of 40 passes for 342 yards with 2 TDs and an INT.  RB Kevin Jones had his first good game of the season rushing 17 times for 81 yards and a TD, he also caught 5 passes for 44 yards.  WR Roy Williams also had a huge game catching 7 passes for 138 yards and a TD.

Brett Favre rolled thru the Lions defense like a hot knife thru butter.  The Packers completed 25 of 36 passes for 340 yards and threw 3 TDs.  The Lions run defense played tough holding the Packers to 60 yards on 27 carries (2.2 ypc).  Rookie linebacker Ernie Sims had 10 tackles and defensed a pass.

The Lions still have alot of work to do.

WR Mike Furrey beat long odds

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Friday 22 September 2006 at 5:16 pm

When Mike Furrey came to camp this year he was behind Mike Williams, Charles Rogers, Corey Bradford and Scott Vines on the depth chart.  Since camp started Rogers has been cut, Vines got hurt, Williams is deep in the doghouse and Furrey beat Bradford out for the starting job.  Through 2 weeks Furrey has 11 catches for 122 yards as Jon Kitna has been looking for him when he gets in trouble.

Starting strong safety Kenoy Kennedy out for Sunday

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Injury Reports by ravenhater on Thursday 21 September 2006 at 12:07 am

Kenoy Kennedy has a foot injury that will prevent him from suiting up on Sunday against the Packers.  Rookie Daniel Bullocks will start and you can bet Brett Favre will be looking his way often.

Lions vs. Packers

Blogged under Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Wednesday 20 September 2006 at 7:17 pm

This is a very interesting match-up despite the fact that both teams are 0-2.  Both of these teams have trouble running the ball, but are good at throwing it.

Look for the Packers to attack the Lions secondary immediately.  Opposing teams have a QB rating of 125.9 against the Lions!  Favre will attack the Lions with Donald Driver (249 yards) and rookie Greg Jennings.  After the Packers establish the passing game, look for Ahman Green to start carrying the football.  The Lions’ run defense has been very good, allowing only 90 yards rushing per game and 3.0 yards per carry.

The Packers have an effective run defense, but the Lions don’t run much so it won’t matter anyhow.  The Lions’ will throw alot of short passes to slow the Packers pass rush.  WR Roy Williams could have a huge game against the Packers’ secondary that hasn’t shown much resistance to the opposition.  Packers’ opponents have completed 66.2% of their passes and have compiled a QB rating of 97.1.

Unlike most, I think this will be a high-scoring game because of the weak pass defenses both teams employ.  Whichever QB plays better…Brett Favre or Jon Kitna….will be the QB on the winning team in this football game.

Lions demolished by Bears

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Monday 18 September 2006 at 12:35 pm

The Lions failed to back-up the ridiculous prediction made by WR Roy Williams.  Jon Kitna was forced to dink and dunk in the passing game because of the heat the Bears were bringing.  Kitna completed 23 of 30 passes (76.7%) for 230 yards, but he couldn’t sustain many drives.  RB Kevin Jones had a rough game carrying the ball 12 times for 44 yards (3.7 ypc) and catching 6 passes for 38 yards (6.3 avg) but he lost two fumbles.  WR Roy Williams caught 6 passes for 71 yards (11.8 avg) and Mike Furrey caught 6 passes for 67 yards (11.2 avg).

The Lions defense played well against the run, holding the Bears to 89 yards on 34 carries (2.6 ypc).  The Bears passed all over the Lions D though, completing 21 of 28 passes (75%) for 294 net yards thru the air.

Overall, this was a very disappointing beat down for the Lions.

WR Roy Williams talking trash

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Friday 15 September 2006 at 5:35 pm

Roy Williams is promising a victory over the Bears this week.  He also went on a rant of how close the Lions were to scoring 40 points last week…….Roy, they scored 6!  Hope they don’t give him a drug test soon.

Lions vs. Bears

Click here to see if the Lions are favored

This game does not appear to be the mis-match that it looked like it would be before the season started. Both of these defenses put on a show in week #1, the Packers shut out the Packers and the Bears held the defending NFC Champions to three field goals.

For the Lions’ offense to be successful, the line is going to have to block much better than it did in the opener. The Lions will have to attempt to run the ball with Kevin Jones a little bit to slow down the Bears pass rush. When the Lions start throwing the ball they will have to spread it around among a few receivers so that the Bears don’t take Roy Williams out of the game.

The Bears will try to run the ball, like they always do on offense. Look for Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson to both get the ball alot. Rex Grossman looked great against the Packers, and will look to build on that success. TE Desmond Clark emerged as a weapon in the passing attack last week, and Gorssman will be looking for him again often, so that the coverage might loosen on his favorite target Mushin Muhammad.

I look for the Bears to prevail over the improving Lions in a low-scoring defensive battle.
