Lions vs. Bills

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Thursday 12 October 2006 at 9:17 am
This game pits two struggling football teams that have trouble scoring.  The Bills are only averaging 15.4 points per game and the Lions only average 17.6 points a game.  The problem for both of these teams have been turnovers.

The Bills will probably come out running with Willis McGahee (439 rushing yards), but the Lions run defense has been their strength as they only allow 96.2 yards rushing per game and 3.3 yards per carry.  This should be the week that Coach Jauron loosens the reins on JP Losman and let’s him throw the ball.  The Lions have the worst pass defense in the NFL, and it’s not even close.  The Lions only have 6 sacks this season and QBs have all day to throw the ball, even good defensive backs can’t hold coverage for 7-10 seconds.  Opposing QBs have a QB rating of 115.1 against the Lions this year!  Look for the Bills at some point to spread the field and throw the ball.  Lee Evans (28 rec, 337 yards) should have a field day against the Lions.  Look for Peerless Price or Roscoe Parrish to have a good game too.

The Lions offense has been fun to watch, because they air it out every week and probably will again against the Bills.  The Lions are throwing the ball 69% of the time, even though they don’t really have great receivers.  The Lions need Roy Williams (neck) to be available for this game.  Williams is a tall target and has great hands (26 rec, 391 yards).  Mike Furrey has played pretty well this season, and Az-Zahir Hakim looked good last week.  Jon Kitna (1,306 yards passing) should have success throwing against the Bills defense which is allowing an 85.3 opposing QB rating.  The area where the Bills have been weak is an area that the Lions probably wouldn’t try to exploit.  The Bills allow 113.4 yards rushing per game and 4.1 yards per carry.  Kevin Jones has the ability to take advantage of that weakness (261 yards rushing), but Co-ordinator Mike Martz loves the passing game.

This football game could go either way, but after watching the Lions blow that lead they had last week…..I have to go with the Bills.

Damien Woody placed on IR

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Injury Reports by ravenhater on Wednesday 11 October 2006 at 5:12 pm

OG Damien Woody has been a tremendous bust for the Lions after they signed him as a free-agent.  Woody will miss the remainder of this season with a foot injury.

Roy Williams hurting

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Wednesday 11 October 2006 at 5:09 pm

Roy Williams is doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Bills.  Williams hurt his neck in the game last week and has been having trouble sleeping this week.  If Williams doesn’t play, his buddy Mike Williams may get a shot for some playing time to prove that he isn’t a complete bust.

Lions special teams not doing too well

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Wednesday 11 October 2006 at 1:34 pm

The Lions do a couple of good things on special teams, but not too many.  The Lions do a great job of covering punts as the Lions only allow an average return of 6.9 yards.  The Lions need to cover kick-offs better as they allow an average return of 23.2 yards.

Jason Hanson has hit 6 of 8 FGs and all 10 XPTs so far this season.  Punter Nick Harris has not been doing so hot.  Harris is averaging 44.3 yards per punt, 35.7 net yards per punt, but he only pins the opposition inside their 20 yard line 15.4% of the time.

Eddie Drummond has been a fine return man for years and he’s doing a good job this season for the Lions.  Drummond is averaging 7.6 yards on punt returns and 24.2 yards on kick-off returns.

Lions choke and lose 26-17 against the Vikings

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Monday 9 October 2006 at 4:14 pm

The Lions were winning this football game 17-3 to start the 4th quarter and folded!  Jon Kitna was the main offender as he lost a fumble that was returned for a TD and threw an interception that was returned for a TD.  Jon Kitna completed 23 of 42 passes for 225 yards with 1 TD and 3 INT. Kitna also had a TD run.  Running back Kevin Jones carried the ball 10 times for 8 yards (0.8 ypc), but he caught 4 passes for 42 yards.  Az-Zahir Hakim caught 8 passes for 92 yards.  Roy Williams left the game with an injury in the first quarter after catching 1 pass for 7 yards.  TE Dan Campbell caught 1 pass, and it was a 12 yard TD.

The Lions defense played pretty bad, but only 12 points were scored off of the Lions defense.  LBs Boss Bailey (11 tackles) and Ernie Sims (9 tackles) came to play, too bad more Lions didn’t.  The Vikings ran the ball 30 times for 135 yards (4.5 ypc).  The Vikings completed 26 of 34 passes for 201 net yards passing.

The Lions really need to make a change at QB…..they should have won this football game!

Lions 0-5

Well now…let’s see what continues to go wrong? Matt Millen for one. Matt, please resign your position.

Defense… please try harder… Ford family…sell the Lions to Mike Illitch… I wonder why the fan base is slipping away? Losses. My beloved Lions are already out of the playoff picture. I once coached a winless kids soccer team to a winning season. Perhaps, when my duty in Iraq is over the Lions will consider giving me a shot as coach. There has to be an answer to why this professional football team continues to struggle year after year.

Anyone else care to join me in a coahing job?…Kidding of course..but c’mon it is obvious we need to scrap the whole program and start over without Matt Millen and the Ford family.

What Was Martz thinking?

Blogged under Uncategorized by John Oates on Friday 6 October 2006 at 2:12 am

I watched the entire lions, rams game last Sunday and I must say the lions offense was looking sharp. However, I do not understand why late in the fourth quarter when Detroit was holding on to a slim lead, they did not give the ball to Kevin Jones. He was having a fenominal second half, no problems moving the ball, Why not? I know Martz likes to show off a strong arieal attack, but us as fans would have preferred a win. Word of advice, if you want to win give Kevin Jones the ball 25 to 30 times a game.

Lions vs. Vikings

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Wednesday 4 October 2006 at 8:38 pm

The Lions offense is starting to show life in the last two weeks with 58 points, problem is their defense gives up faster than they can score them (72 allowed).  The Vikings have had trouble scoring this season (15.8 points per game) but their defense has been super.

The Lions must not turn the ball over if they’re going to have any chance to win this football game.  The Lions have passed twice as many times as they’ve run (150-75) and I don’t see that changing any time soon.  RB Kevin Jones (253 yards rushing) has made the most of his limited chances, and the Lions should use him more, but I don’t think they will this week because the Vikings only allow 89.0 yards rushing per game and 3.4 yards per carry.  Look for Kitna (1,081 yards passing) to attack the Vikings secondary with Roy Williams (25 rec, 384 yards) and Mike Furrey (22 rec, 242 yards).  Kitna also likes to throw to RBs Kevin Jones (21 rec, 131 yards) and Shawn Bryson (6 rec, 84 yards) out of the backfield.

The Vikings prefer to run the ball with Chester Taylor (85 carries, 298 yards), but the Lions strength is their run defense which allows only 86.5 yards rushing per game and 3.0 yards per carry.  Brad Johnson (927 yards passing) has to be licking his chops to face the Lions secondary.  The Lions have allowed their opponents to complete 71.3% of their passes for 1,172 yards with 10 TDs and zero INT!   Look for Johnson to chop up the Lions with short passes to Troy Williamson, Travis Taylor, Jermaine Wiggins and Marcus Robinson.  Also look for Johnson to throw a few passes to Chester Taylor and Mewelde Moore out of the backfield.

The Vikings will score the most points they have all season and their defense will force Kitna to make a couple of huge mistakes.

Kitna needs to limit mistakes

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Tuesday 3 October 2006 at 7:10 pm

Jon Kitna’s numbers look great, but anyone that has watched the Lions knows he has a knack for making the big mistake.  Kitna has completed 98 of 150 passes (65.3%) for 1,081 yards with 4 TDs and 3 INT.  Kitna’s QB rating is a fine 87.1.  Kitna needs to get rid of the ball quicker as he has been sacked 14 times this season.  Kitna also has small hands and is prone to fumble.  If the Lions are to turn this season around, it begins with Kitna taking better care of the football.

Lions lose shootout with Rams 41-34

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Monday 2 October 2006 at 11:44 am

The Lions played their best offense game of the season, but came up a little short against the St. Louis Rams yesterday.  Jon Kitna completed 29 of 43 passes for 280 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INT.  RB Kevin Jones had a good game carrying the ball 19 times for 93 yards (4.9 ypc) and 2 TDs, he also caught 5 passes for 4 yards.  Roy Williams had another good game catching 9 passes for 139 yards and Mike Furrey caught 8 passes for 82 yards and 2 TDs.

The defense just couldn’t deal with the Rams on Sunday.  The Rams had 106 yards rushing on 27 carries (3.9 ypc).  The Rams raided the Lions thru the air completing 26 of 42 passes for 321 net yards passing.  CB Jamar Fletcher had 9 tackles.  LB Ernie Sims had 8 tackles.  Rookie safety Daniel Bullocks had 8 tackles and a pass defensed.  Dre Bly had 3 tackles and defensed 4 passes.
