The Lions release a pair of defensive linemen

The Lions continue to get rid of defensive players as they released DTs Tyoka Jackson and Marcus Bell.  Jackson played in 15 games and he made 12 tackles and had 2 sacks.  Bell played in 13 games and he made 39 tackles, had 1 sack, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.  The Lions are starting over with their defensive line so that’s why they got rid of these guys.

The Lions trade DE James Hall to the Rams

The Lions traded DE James Hall to the Rams for a fifth round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.  Hall had an injury filled 2006 season as he only played in 7 games and he made 24 tackles, sacked the QB 5 times and forced a fumble.  In 7 seasons in Detroit, Hall played in 89 games and he made 277 tackles, sacked the QB 33 times, had 1 interception, defensed 10 passes, forced 11 fumbles and recovered 6 fumbles (2 returned for TDs).  The draft pick should help out the Lions who are clearly in rebuilding mode.

The Lions trade Dre’ Bly to the Broncos

The Lions traded CB Dre’ Bly to the Broncos for running back Tatum Bell, offensive tackle George Foster and a draft pick believed to be a 5th rounder.  Bly really didn’t fit in with Rod Marinelli’s style of defense.  With that in mind the trade looks like a good one for the Lions.  With Kevin Jones to miss as much as half of next season the Lions needed a running back and Tatum Bell will be a good fit in their offense.  He has great speed and can go the distance at any time from anywhere on the field.  He played in 13 games (all starts) last season and he carried the football 233 times for 1,025 yards (4.4 ypc) with 2 TD runs.  He also caught 24 passes for 115 yards (4.8 avg).  Over his three year career, Bell has played in 42 games (14 starts) and he’s carried the ball 481 times for 2,342 yards (4.9 ypc) with 13 TD runs.  He has caught 47 passes for 299 yards (6.4 avg).  He will help make the Lions offense explosive next season.  Gigantic OT George Foster (6’7″, 338 pounds) played in 16 games and started 13 of them last season.  In four seasons with the Broncos, Foster has played in 49 games….he started 45 of them.  The addition of Foster now means that the Lions don’t have to pick OT Joe Thomas unless they want to.  They also could trade down.
