2. (61) Gerald Alexander, S
The Lions needed help all over their defense but the selection of Gerald Alexander in the 2nd round was a huge reach. Alexander was a corner that was converted to strong safety last season. He has nice size for a safety as he’s 6′0″ and weighs in at 203 pounds. He’s a little slow for a defensive back (4.56 40) so the Lions will need to make sure they have help for him. Alexander also needs to get tough as he often whiffs on tackles in the open field and he’s soft against the run. At Boise State, Alexander played in 52 games (38 starts) and he made 155.5 tackles, broke up 27 passes, had 9 interceptions (75 return yards), forced 1 fumble and recovered 1 fumble. Look for Alexander to be valuable on special teams for the Lions immediately and possibly in their nickel and dime packages.
