The Detroit Lions had their usual draft last April

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by admin on Wednesday 9 April 2008 at 7:33 pm

The Lions did what they always do last season…..draft a WR in the first round.  The Lions probably would have been smart to trade down and get some extra picks.  Calvin Johnson was the receiver in question and he had some good and some bad days.  He didn’t live up to the hype as a rookie but he still has a lot of time to improve.  Johnson played in 15 games (10 starts) for the Lions last season and he carried the ball 4 times for 52 yards (13.0 ypc) with 1 TD run.  He also caught 48 passes for 756 yards (15.8 avg) with 4 TD grabs.  QB Drew Stanton was the first of three 2nd round picks the Lions made.  Stanton spent all of his rookie season on the Injured Reserve List as he needed knee surgery.  Many coaches on the Lions’ staff still prefer him over Jon Kitna.  DE Ikaika Alama-Francis was the 2nd of the Lions’ picks in the 2nd round.  Alama-Francis played in 6 games (0 starts) last season for the Lions and he made 12 tackles.  The Lions did make a nice pick with the 3rd second round pick they made when they selected safety Gerald Alexander.  Alexander started all 16 games as a rookie last season and he made 81 tackles, had 2 sacks, defensed 6 passes and intercepted 2 passes.  He will likely be a starter at safety for the forseeable future on the Lions.  4th round pick (CB) A.J. Davis was cut twice by the Lions last season as he never played in a game for them.  The Lions’ other 4th round pick (OG) Manny Ramirez didn’t play until the last week of the season and he didn’t start that game.  In the 5th round the Lions selected linebacker Johnny Baldwin who was cut in camp.  Baldwin finished up the season playing in 3 games (0 starts) for the Chiefs.  The 7th round pick of the Lions was cornerback Ramzee Robinson.  Robinson played in 6 games (0 starts) for the Lions and he made 7 tackles.

GRADE FOR THE 2007 SEASON:  C-

GRADE FOR THE FUTURE:  B

The Lions have signed linebacker Alfred Fincher.  Fincher played in 7 games for the Saints last season and he made a whopping 3 tackles.  Fincher has now played in 24 games in his NFL career and he has made 20 tackles.  Fincher will likely just provide depth at linebacker and on special teams.

The Detroit Lions sign linebacker Gilbert Gardner

The Lions have signed linebacker Gilbert Gardner.  Gardner played in 13 games for the Titans last season and he made only 11 tackles.  Gardner has now played in 50 games in his NFL career and he has made 106 tackles, defensed 7 passes, has 1 sack and he has intercepted 1 pass.  Gardner will likely be a back up and a special teams player for the Lions in 2008.
