The Detroit Lions claim RB Marcus Thomas off waivers from the Chargers

The Lions have claimed rookie RB Marcus Thomas off waivers from the Chargers.  The Lions continue to rebuild the RB corps and they might have a good one here.  Thomas played in all 4 preseason games for the Chargers this season and he carried the ball 32 times for 121 yards (3.8 ypc).  He also caught 5 passes for 38 yards (7.6 avg) in the preseason.  Thomas will get a chance at some point for the Lions and he will likely play well.  What a steal this was for the Lions as the Chargers were foolish to not keep him.

The Detroit Lions sign RB Rudi Johnson

The Lions have signed 28-year old running back Rudi Johnson.  The Lions hope that Johnson can stay healthy this season as he was dinged up quite a bit in Cincinnati last season.  Johnson played in 11 games (9 starts) for the Bengals last season and he carried the ball 170 times for 497 yards (2.9 ypc) with 3 TD runs.  He also caught 13 passes for 110 yards (8.5 avg) with 1 TD grab for the Bengals last year.  Johnson is a power runner which the Lions didn’t have on the roster so he will likely provide muscle in the short running situations for the Lions.  Johnson has now played in 81 games (59 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 1,441 times for 5,742 yards (4.0 ypc) with 48 TD runs.  He has also caught 101 passes for 588 yards (5.8 avg) with 1 TD grab.  This was a good low risk/high reward signing for the Lions.
