The Detroit Lions need to blow up the QB position and start over in 2009
The Detroit Lions should really consider getting rid of all five of the QBs that appeared in games for them last season. They were a big part of the reason the team finished 0-16 in 2008. 36-year old Jon Kitna didn’t play too well before his season ended with a back injury. Kitna played in 4 games (all starts) for the Lions last season and he completed 68 of 120 passes (56.7%) for 758 yards with 5 TD passes and 5 interceptions (72.2 QB Rating). He also carried the ball 6 times for 34 yards (5.7 ypc) last year. Kitna has now played in 128 games (115 starts) in his NFL career and he has completed 2,462 of 4,114 passes (59.8%) for 27,293 yards with 152 TD passes and 151 interceptions (76.6 QB Rating). He has also carried the ball 279 times for 811 yards (2.9 ypc) with 10 TD runs. He likely won’t be back with the Lions in 2009.
The Lions signed 31-year old Daunte Culpepper to a 2-year deal last season but chances are that he won’t be back because he didn’t show much. Culpepper played in 5 games (all starts) for the Lions last season and he completed 60 of 115 passes (52.2%) for 786 yards with 4 TD passes and 6 interceptions (63.9 QB Rating). He also carried the ball 12 times for 25 yards (2.1 ypc) with 1 TD run in 2008. Culpepper has now played in 97 games (95 starts) in his NFL career and he completed 1,927 of 3,042 passes (63.3%) for 23,208 yards with 146 TD passes and 100 interceptions (89.0 QB Rating). He has also carried the ball 496 times for 2,561 yards (5.2 ypc) with 34 TD Runs.
25-year old Dan Orlovsky got his first real chance to show what he could do this season. He played in 10 games (7 starts) for the Lions in 2008 and he completed 143 of 255 passes (56.1%) for 1,616 yards with 8 TD passes and 8 interceptions (72.6 QB Rating). He also carried the ball 7 times for 29 yards (4.1 ypc) last season. Orlovsky has now played in 12 games (7 starts) in his NFL career and he has completed 150 of 272 passes (55.1%) for 1,679 yards with 8 TD passes and 8 interceptions (71.3 QB Rating).
24-year old Drew Stanton got his first NFL action this season after sitting out his rookie year with a knee injury. Stanton played in 3 games (0 starts) last season and he completed 9 of 17 passes (52.9%) for 119 yards with 1 TD pass and 0 interceptions (95.0 QB Rating). He also carried the football 3 times for 20 yards (6.7 ypc). Stanton could win the starting job at QB in 2009 for the Lions as they have nowhere to go but up.
28-year old Drew Henson made a brief appearance for the Lions in 2008 but he won’t likely be back next season. He played in 2 games (0 starts) for the Lions last season and he completed 1 of 2 passes (50%) for 20 yards with 0 TD passes and 0 interceptions (85.4 QB Rating). Henson has now played in 9 games (1 start) in his NFL career and he has completed 11 of 20 passes (55%) for 98 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 interception (64.2 QB Rating). He also has carried the football 1 time for 7 yards in his career.
