The Lions have signed 28-year old OG Milford Brown to a 1-year deal.  Brown played in 6 games (4 starts) for the Jaguars last season.  He has now played in 53 games (47 starts) in his seven year NFL career.  This was a good signing for the Lions as Brown stands at 6’5″, 330 pounds and he has a mean streak.

The Detroit Lions sign safety Calvin Lowry

The Lions have signed 26-year old safety Calvin Lowry.  Lowry played in 11 games for the Broncos last season and he made 18 tackles and defensed 2 passes.  Lowry has now played in 43 games in his NFL career making 87 tackles, defensing 13 passes, forcing 1 fumble and he has picked off two passes.  This was a good signing for the Lions so late before the season starts.

The Detroit Lions place Jared DeVries on I.R.

Blogged under Big Lions News,Bloglockers,Front Page,Injury Reports by admin on Saturday 15 August 2009 at 5:40 pm

The Lions have placed 33-year old DE Jared DeVries on the Injured Reserve List with a torn Achilles Tendon ending his season.  He played in 10 games last season for the Lions in which he made 29 tackles, defensed 3 passes and he had 2 sacks.  In his nine year NFL career (all with the Lions), DeVries has played in 118 games and made 185 tackles, has defensed 8 passes, has 16.5 sacks and he has forced six fumbles.  This hurts the depth on the outside of the Lions’ defensive line.

The Detroit Lions sign Shaun Smith

The Lions have signed 27-year old, 6’2″, 325 pound NT/DT Shaun Smith.  Smith played in 11 games for the Browns last season making 36 tackles and forcing 1 fumble.  Smith has now played six years in the NFL covering 60 games in which he has made 144 tackles, he’s defensed 4 passes, has 2 sacks and he has forced 2 fumbles.  This was a good move for the Lions who needed some help up front.

The Detroit Lions sign Billy McMullen

Blogged under Big Lions News,Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page by admin on Saturday 15 August 2009 at 5:34 pm

The Lions have signed 29-year old WR Billy McMullen to a 1-year deal.  McMullen played in 4 games for the Seahawks last season and he caught 7 passes for 124 yards (17.7 avg).  He has now played in 49 games in his 5 year NFL career and he has caught 52 passes for 725 yards (13.9 avg) with 3 TD grabs.  Don’t expect miracles out of McMullen who will likely be way down the Lions’ depth chart when the season begins if he even makes the final roster.

UPDATE:  The Lions have released Billy McMullen.
