The Detriot Lions release DE Jared DeVries

Blogged under Big Lions News,Bloglockers,Front Page,Leaving Town by admin on Tuesday 23 February 2010 at 9:27 pm

The Lions have released 33-year old DE Jared DeVries.  DeVries missed all of last season after tearing his ACL in training camp.  DeVries spent his whole 10-year career with the Lions having played in 118 games in which he had 185 tackles, 16.5 sacks, 6 forced fumbles and he defensed 8 passes.  The Lions won’t miss him much in 2010 but he did have a solid career as a backup for them.

UPDATE:  (4/11/2010) - The Lions have re-signed Jared DeVries to a 1-year, $1.7 million dollar deal.

Kevin Smith regressed last season for the Detroit Lions

The Lions will definitely be bringing in competition over the off-season for 23-year old running back Kevin Smith.  Smith played in 13 games last season for the Lions and he carried the ball 217 times for 747 yards (3.4 ypc) wiht 4 TD runs.  He also caught 41 passes for 415 yards (10.1 avg) with 1 TD grab last year.  Smith was banged up all year for the Lions and he wasn’t that effective when he did play.  With that in mind I see Smith having to fight for his job in training camp this season.  Smith has now played in 29 games for the Lions and he has carried the ball 455 times for 1,723 yards (3.8 ypc) with 12 TD runs.  He also caught 80 passes for 701 yards (8.8 avg) with 1 TD grab in his career with the Lions.

The Detroit Lions sign DeDe Dorsey

The Lions have signed 25-year old running back DeDe Dorsey.  Dorsey has not played in the NFL since the 2008 season with the Bengals.  He has played in 29 games (2 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 26 times for 191 yards (7.3 ypc).  Dorsey has also caught 6 passes for 68 yards (11.3 avg) in his career.  He will likely battle for the third down back job as he doesn’t have the body to take a big pounding.
